1979 Mustang Track Car
IRS / SLA Suspension
This has been my love and passion for so many years, an absolute blast of a driver's car and I'm hoping that it finds someone just as passionate.
Started life as a 4-cyl '79 Mustang, the car was gutted and lightened in the early 2000s as an American Iron car where it has a few feature wins with the previous owner (along with a few good stories to share).
My buddy and I have built this car from the ground up over several years. The front SLA suspension is custom, as a prototype for our business we attempted: "Peak Alpha Racing." It works great, planted with Koni coil overs, manual steering and enough caster to make your arms go numb after 20 minutes.. it is at -9* and needs to be brought down to around -3*.) Just watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAU8Foe6UxU&t=3s
Features:
Freshly rebuilt Koni 8216 Single Adjustable Shocks in all four corners and Eibach Springs (less than 20 hours of race time on rebuilds) all done by Koni shock specialists.
The upper control arms were redesigned from the SLA video to a much beefier setup, using a simpler but still adjustable design. Pictures available upon request.
The rear end is a built, Delrin bushing 2004 Cobra IRS with a custom pushrod suspension. The build of the suspension can be seen in the videos below. It has nearly everything Maximum Motorsports has to offer outside of the differential cooler.
Brakes are Cobra brakes, front and rear. Front are from a '98 Cobra, Rear are from an 04 and both are sporting GLoc Brake pads.
2004 Cobra wheels fitted with Toyo R888r tires that have about 3 track weekends on them.
Engine is a rebuilt, stock bottom 302 supporting GT40 heads that have been completely gone through, Trick Flow Stage 1 Camshaft, Edelbrock Air Gap Intake Manifold and a 650cfm carb (still could use some adjustment). Canton Road Race Pan and Pickup, proper baffling with an oil cooler / oil filter relocation kit. The car will come with a second long block, complete with clutch and bellhousing.
As shown in pictures, it spots a Wilwood Hydraulic Clutch and Manual Brake setup. Brakes feel great and I have not had any issues driving it on the track. The hydraulic clutch is a pushrod style slave cylinder mounted to the trans case. I have enjoyed driving the car without any assists, but as mentioned before, the front end needs to be realigned to get rid of the caster.
The car will come with a power steering rack and pinion, pump, and brackets if you want it. I removed it due to the fluid overheating, as it needed a cooler and I wanted to try manual rack anyway.
Forewarning, the entire car is adjustable, and it will take someone who understands how to setup a car to get it right. Even as it sits, it's not perfect, but it isn't something that can be taken to an alignment place to have it done. They'd probably just look at you funny... Caster, camber, wheelbase, width, etc. all needs to be dialed in with each setup change.
T5 Transmission. Yes, we kept the T5. While some view it as a negative, we never have. It's light, supports the power we are making and the power we need, allows us to place the unused weight where we want it if we were to ever race in a class, and it's simple. It's able to be rebuilt quickly if needed and we haven't had issues. This T5 is out of a 2004 V6 and we swapped the input shaft to work with the scatterproof bellhousing. McLeod Clutch keeps everything engaged.
The fuel tank is older, but has new foam in it. It would not pass for a class car (due to age of the tank), but for HPDE and fun driving, it's not an issue. Videos show it running/driving. Here is a track day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dccfucF9ok&t=924s
It's fully caged as you can tell from the pictures, it's a good HPDE car, and it's a builder's car. It's a driver's car. It's not something that will smoke everything on the track, but it's raw, it's fun, and it makes everyone smile as it goes by with that beautiful sound coming out of each side of the car.
There's so much to say about the car, so many details, I could go on for a long time. If you're interested in a car that has had someone's heart and soul poured into it, and then did so with one of his closest buddies and will make you work for the track, then it's the car for you.
